Description: This photograph shows two children hauling a wagon load of newspapers and other products to be recycled for the war effort during World War II. Recycling and scrap metal drives were one of the ways Americans supported the war effort during the Second World War. As steel and other materials were needed to make ships, weapons, and other tools for the war effort, Americans were called upon to recycle goods that were not deemed essential. Government-produced posters, radio commercials and advertisements encouraged scrap drives, which were often sponsored by schools or community groups. Description: This 2.75" x 2.75" (6.99 x 6.99 cm) slide of Governor James Rhodes (1909-2001) at Bob Evans' farm in Gallia County, Ohio was taken around 1966. Restaurant entrepreneur Bob Evans (b. 1918) was born in Sugar Ridge, Ohio. Evans and his wife Jewell began farming near Rio Grande, Ohio, where they raised six children. Evans also owned a small diner in Gallipolis, and began making his own sausage in 1948. Fueled by the success of his sausage, Bob Evans Restaurant opened in 1962. Evans retired from the company in 1986. In 2004, Bob Evans Restaurants owned 549 restaurants in 22 states. After his retirement, Evans remained active in supporting 4-H and Future Farmers of America and working to preserve the environment. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This portrait identified on the negative as Mrs. Sammy Jewell was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in the region of southeastern Ohio and central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society (now the Ohio History Connection) received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio History Center. View on Ohio Memory.
